Virginia CE renewal: common questions
How many CE hours do Virginia real estate salespersons need?
16 hours each two-year license term, once you've renewed at least once. For licenses expiring on or after June 30, 2026, 11 of those hours are required topics and 5 are electives.
Which CE topics are required?
3 hours of Ethics and Standards of Conduct, 2 of Fair Housing, 2 of Legal Updates and Emerging Trends, 2 of Real Estate Agency and 2 of Real Estate Contracts. The remaining 5 hours can be real estate related electives or more of the required subjects.
Do new salespersons need CE for their first renewal?
No. New salespersons complete 30 hours of post-license education instead and need no CE in their first two-year term.
Does CE apply if I'm reactivating an inactive license?
Yes. The same requirements apply to inactive brokers and experienced salespersons who apply to activate their licenses.
Can I use CE from another state?
Up to 5 hours, applied only to electives, if you hold a current license in that state and took the courses during your current two-year term. Email the documentation to reschool@dpor.virginia.gov.
