Texas CE renewal: common questions
How many CE hours do Texas real estate agents need?
Texas requires 18 hours of continuing education every two-year license period: 4 hours of Legal Update I, 4 hours of Legal Update II, 3 hours of contract-related coursework and 7 hours of electives. If your broker has made you a supervisor, the 6-hour Broker Responsibility course is part of your 18 hours.
When is my Texas CE due?
Before your license expires. Texas licenses renew every two years, and TREC sends a renewal notice about 90 days before your expiration date. TREC recommends finishing your CE at least 10 days before you expire so it has time to process.
What happens if I don't finish CE before my license expires?
If you renew on active status without completing CE, TREC charges a $200 CE deferral fee, which lets you stay active for 60 more days while you finish. You can also renew up to six months late, but a late renewal puts your license on inactive status and CE can't be deferred.
Do I need CE for my first renewal?
No. Sales agents renewing for the first time complete Sales Agent Apprentice Education (SAE) instead: 90 hours of SAE courses plus 8 hours of Legal Update I and II. The 18-hour CE requirement applies from your second renewal on.
Can I renew without completing CE?
Only on inactive status. You can renew an inactive license without CE, but you can't practice real estate until you meet the requirements and return to active status.
