New York CE renewal: common questions
How many CE hours do New York real estate agents need?
22.5 hours of approved continuing education in each two-year license term.
What topics are required?
At least 2 hours of cultural competency, 2 hours of implicit bias, 2.5 hours of ethical business practices, 1 hour of recent legal matters and 3 hours of fair housing, plus law of agency: 1 hour, or 2 hours for a salesperson's first renewal.
Can extra hours carry over to my next term?
No. The Department of State says continuing education must be completed within each license term.
Can I get an extension?
Only in bona fide hardship cases. Send a written request, your renewal form, the fee and original documentation of the hardship, such as medical records, preferably before your license expires.
What if I don't renew on time?
There's no grace period to keep working. You have two years from the expiration date to renew; after that, you must meet the current education requirements and pass the state exam again.
